IOB Application Instructions

The RCN has modest funds to provide seed/pilot money for early career researchers who are RCN members to travel to NEON field sites to collect data or to visit the laboratory of another RCN member to gain new laboratory or technical skills.

To apply, please follow the steps below.

  • Application requirements

    Applications should be a maximum of one page long, single spaced. Please include your name, contact information, and the proposed sponsor and host PI’s name at the top of the application. The application should include information on:

    1. Plans and purpose of the exchange, such as names of personnel involved, new procedures being learned, cross-training goals, or other collaborative projects being undertaken.

    2. The expected long-term impacts of the exchange.

    3. Timeline for project that justifies the duration of the exchange.

  • Additional documents to include in application

    Please include a letter of recommendation from your advisor/PI. This letter can be included as an attachment with your application or can be sent directly by your PI to neon.rcn@gmail.com.

    In addition:

    1. A brief letter of acknowledgement from the exchange PI stating support for your work.

    2. A breakdown of your budget, including:

      1. $3,000 maximum

      2. Travel expenses only (flights, lodging ground transport, etc.). No salary support is possible and economy travel is required.

      3. Meals and incidental expenses.

      4. Any funding that may be provided from other sources.

    3. Travel expenses must follow the University of Michigan Travel Expenses Policy.

  • Post-exchange Deliverables

    A report on the research exchange in the form of a blog post for our website must be provided (see examples of successful blog posts from the g2p2pop RCN). These enable us to share the successes of the research exchanges with future RCN members. Successful applicants will be required to report any academic or career progression that the research exchanged contributed towards as well as any tangible products (publications, presentations, proposals, etc.) that we need to report to NSF annually.
