Laboratory Exchanges & NEON Site Visits

The RCN has modest funds to provide seed/pilot money for early career researchers who are RCN members to travel to NEON field sites to collect data or to visit the laboratory of another RCN member to gain new laboratory or technical skills.

  • What is a laboratory exchange or NEON site visit?

These exchanges or site visits facilitate travel for early career researchers (undergraduate/graduate students, post-docs) to travel between their home institution and another institution where they will be conducting research or collaborating with other researchers in the host lab. The exchanges also help pay for costs associated with visiting NEON sites or the NEON Biorepository or the lab of a member of this RCN, especially for researchers to establish new research projects.

  • Why do a laboratory exchange or NEON site visit?

A laboratory exchange or NEON site visit can help you to network with scientists from different institutions. This would be to learn new procedures, analyze samples, or create and conduct further collaborative projects with researchers at the other institution, NEON field site, or the NEON Biorepository.

  • Who qualifies for a laboratory exchange or NEON site visit?

University undergraduate and graduate students, as well as post-doctoral scholars, who are members of the RCN and whose overseeing and host PIs are also members of the RCN. Anyone is welcome to join the RCN. If you aren’t a member, contact us to join.

  • How do I apply to receive funds for a laboratory exchange?

See details in the IOB Exchange Application Page

  • How will I find out if my laboratory exchange was funded?

Laboratory exchange application evaluations are ongoing. Please apply at least 3 months ahead of the requested exchange date. You will receive an e-mail directly by the RCN about the status of your application.
